"I missed an appointment because there were no parking spaces"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I had an Outpatient appointment at 10: 50 am today at Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock. I drove from Ayr to Kilmarnock for this, having fasted all morning as this was the requirement.

I’m angry and frustrated that having driven to the hospital there were no parking spaces to be found. I drove around for 15 minutes trying to find a space getting more and more agitated that there were no spaces and I was late to the point of missing my appointment.

In the end I gave up looking for a space and went back home, I’ll need to make another appointment. Many services have now been merged at the Crosshouse Hospital from other hospitals in the area. They need to ensure there is enough parking to accommodate this higher number of users.

Dear Over736

Thank you for taking the time to use Patient Opinion to tell us about this very frustrating experience. I have passed details to the Corporate Support Services Directorate so that I can share information with you on what is being done to address the very significant problems that seem to happening with parking on the Crosshouse site. Although it doesn't help with your missed appointment, I will share information when I receive this in relation to what can be done to improve things and prevent you and others from being in this sort of situation in the future.

Some hospitals in the USA have valet parking and I have often wondered what it would take to introduce something like this in our hospitals, though perhaps that is something for longer term!

I hope you were given another appointment soon. If there is anything that can be done to support you with this, then please do get in touch with me directly at craig.white@aapct.scot.nhs.uk

Best wishes

Dear Over736

Our Head of Support Services covering University Hospital at Crosshouse has reviewed your helpful feedback and provided this response:

Please accept my sincere apologies for the car parking experienced at University Hospital Crosshouse.

There are currently 1877 car parking spaces provided at University Hospital Crosshouse, however, as you have noted these spaces are very quickly utilised, especially during weekdays when the majority of clinics and day surgery take place, as well as large groups of staff who work weekdays on day shifts.

The Car Parking is also currently being affected by some clinics which have a high volume of patients attending for short periods of time and this is evident on Tuesday and Wednesday’s. In addition to this the hospital has seen a much higher than normal rate of admissions and the hospital is currently extremely busy with in-patients.

In the past twelve months work was completed to increase the size of the main hospital car park by 44 designated car parking spaces.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran recognise that there are still issues with car parking and in order to address the problem at our major sites, NHS Ayrshire and Arran has set up a Car Parking Policy Group, led by a Director, to review car parking arrangements at all of our major sites, with a view to improving the current situation. Three members of the public are currently represented on this Group.

The scope of the review includes giving consideration to the feasibility of introducing designated areas for staff, patients and the general public, and a review of the number and location of disabled parking spaces. Consideration will also be given to improving management arrangements in order to prevent inappropriate and inconsiderate parking.

We will make sure that you are kept updated on progress of this work moving forward, so that you are aware of the changes being made.

Best wishes

Craig White
