"There needs to be more communication and basic care."

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

He went in after collapsing at home, ended up in one ward and was then moved to another two day later.

The care in one ward was fine with plenty of communications but the care in the ward he was moved to seemed so poor and fragmented I had to 'put pen to paper.'

There just appears to be no care anymore at this place and you're just a "number" and not a patient. Nurses are few and far between and obviously can't cope with the level of workload. My Dad who though very ill has all his faculties despite being in his 80's and asked for some information he never got. He also asked for pain killers three times in one day and that was simply ignored or forgotten. Staff seem unable or unwilling to provide any form of basic care and to find a doctor or consultant is like trying to find hens teeth or rocking horse poo. I know my dad was left alone in bed for hours as another patient on the same ward said the same thing. It all appears to be run by assistants or seemingly cheap labour. I remember the days when Matron or Sister sat in a ward and she was there to help but to even find anyone who appeared to be in charge was a challenge,

The whole experience has left me somewhat bitter and that my dad, helpless at the time relied on my mother who is very ill herself and my sister. I just get the impression that relatives and friends are expected to visit to be skivvies to the nurses. There needs to be more communication and basic care. This is something you don't even appear to get here. I remember someone bringing something around that looked like slop for dinner and it was still there the day after despite going out of date. No one bothered to check if he had eaten it or to check what he wanted.

In a word no communication, no proper care and the fundaments of nursing seems to be simply ignored. It's fragmented and disjointed with no coherent time line or information and some of that conflicted. I am just glad he's out of the place. If he's going to die, he's going to do it with dignity and on his own terms. I am just so appalled at this place,

For the record I was in NNH a few years back and my care was utterly appalling to the point where I relied on another patient to help me but that's another story.
