"Outstanding Care - People the NHS should be Really..."

About: Northern General Hospital

Anything else?

I have just concluded my treatment for bowel cancer at the Northern General and have been referred for further treatment at Weston Park and the Royal Hallamshire. Throughout my stay as an in-patient (Firth 4, the Intensive Care and High Dependency Units) at the Northern General the care I received was outstanding. I was consistently treated with great kindness and respect by all members of staff and felt that myself and my family were involved, as far as possible, in my care and treatment. I was especially impressed – and very grateful for - the arrangement to try a new PICO negative pressure wound therapy dressing with the aim of closing my wound as quickly as possible (which worked and delighted my district nurses so much they all came to observe!) in order that chemotherapy treatment could begin without delay. During follow-up out-patient clinic sessions, various tests and investigative procedures I was made to feel comfortable, relaxed and reassured and left hospital feeling happy and confident. The consultant surgeon in charge of my care was excellent in every aspect! He was a very caring and considerate doctor who took time to listen and discuss issues with me to ensure that the most effective treatment and best possible care was given. At all times I felt that management of my treatment and safety were of paramount importance. The work he does is exemplary and sets the precedent. I should also add that my consultant`s secretary, in addition to being very efficient, was always very friendly, pleasant and kind and quick to find an answer to any queries I had. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust must be very proud to have these remarkable people in their employ. Little wonder that the Trust has been highlighted as being within the best performing band in England for it`s excellent care.
