"my stay at Adam Appley ward and DIEP op"

About: St Thomas' Hospital (London)

Anything else?

I have been very impressed by the whole care given to me on this ward by all the staff members. They were not only professional but compassioned too and were generous with their time and attention. I received good clinical response and treatment and was made to feel involved in my care. In terms of coordination and communication amongst departments- breast unit, plastic surgery and oncology, especially facilitated by my own breast care nurse have demonstrated to me the best practice in NHS. This means that it can be done everywhere else, does it not? Although I was given a very thorough explanation about the DIEP op and possible risks factors and did my own research, with hindsight I probably would just have had the mastectomy as things did not go to plan. I think the surgeons enthusiasm about the success of this op had positively affected my decision. This may need to be moderated perhaps. I also wonder whether there is scope for further research into positive and negative outcomes about DIEP op for people who had radiotherapy at different intervals between therapy and the op. I am sure some clinician somewhere is considering this. I was happy for my op site to be photographed after the first op when I developed tissue necrosis. I recommend Guys and St. Thomas's as centres of very good practice for breast cancer.
