"I keep having to explain to different people how I feel and why"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital / Old age psychiatry

(as the patient),

I have been receiving psychiatric treatment for 15 years during which time I saw the same CPN. However, since she was promoted recently I have seen 5 CPNs in two months. I’m 67 and keep having to explain to different people how I feel and why I feel the way I do.

I last saw a psychiatrist at the beginning of the year and should have seen them again in September but I forgot. I’m beginning to get memory problems and only remembered about my appointment in September when they sent me a new appointment for next March. The hospital does not send any reminders.

My GP is very good, he has always kept an eye on me and keeps me going but can’t help with the appointments I keep forgetting.

I am sorry to hear that you have had to explain to so many different nurses how and why you have been feeling the way you do - this is not at all desirable and isn't likely to help you develop the sort of therapeutic relationship that will support you feeling that as an organisation we are ensuring we focus on what matters to you.

It's is all the more disappointing that having explained your situation to so many people we have been unable to co-ordinate things in a way that supports you with accessing other appointments, providing the sort of reminders that you have mentioned.

Can you please get in touch with me so that I can put you in touch with our senior doctors and nurses working in these services - to make sure that you don't want until March for another appointment with the Psychiatrist and that any other support or help is put in place (with the same person each time). I will look out for your message and look forward to putting you in touch with colleagues who will sort this out for you. I also want to make sure that I am assured we have arrangements in place to make sure that others don't have the same experiences you have had.
