"7 hours to see a doctor in A& E"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital

Anything else?

Firstly a bit about my medical history. I am a crohns patient and has been told by my consultant that if ever I had severe abdominal cramps and vomiting to go straight to A & E as I may have a bowel obstruction. So Saturday night when I was in agony and being sick I went straight to A&E and arrived at 23.45. Although it said there was a 2 Hour wait I was seen by a nurse straight away. She said I needed to go to majors and got me a trolley, I was in no fit state to walk. I arrived in a corridor and waited, there were other people waiting in the corridor also on trolleys. A nurse said I needed ant sickness drugs, a blood test and pain killers. I was feeling really cold the nurse told my son where to find the blankets. I started to shake violently and was rushed into the majors room. My husband and son put their coats over me too.The drugs began to work straight away and I soon felt a lot better. The nurse hooked me up to a machine which took my blood pressure and pulse regularly. The nurse was caring and came to check on me and got me a drink of water. In the next few hours I only saw the nurse, when I felt that my pain was beginning to come back she offered me some ibuprofen! ( this is never given to people with crohns) She did get me some codeine which helped. I was not examined by a doctor until 7 am where he did feel my abdomen and listened to my chest. He noted I was very dehydrated and said I needed a drip,by his expression he was amazed I didn't already have one. He did seem a good doctor and listened to me. My concern is that I think I was lucky on the night that my wait didn't cause me any harm but on another night somebody else especially if they were on their own might not be so lucky. I think if your ill enough to be admitted to majors surely you should be seen by a doctor a lot sooner.
