"Totally ignored my labour care plan"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

Anything else?

Requested a water birth but told it wasn't possible with no explanation as to why. Was given a bouncy ball to juggle about in instead, only to have it taken off me 15 minutes later as someone needed it more than me! Felt worthless. I requested intimate birth just required staff and my husband. Was practically bullied into having a student deliver my baby so she could get her quota, despite having it underlined in my care plan no students. She misweighed my baby and I was given 3 varying weights all documented differently on paperwork. I seriously do not actually know what my daughters true birthweight was! I haemorrhaged twice and was kept on bed rest yet no one would help me when my baby cried so I had to get up. I haemorrhaged again and had to clean it up myself as everyone busy! It seemed so understaffed that staff seemed stressed which effected the way they care. I'm just glad my husband was there so I wasn't on my own for hours on end in pain! No one believed I was possibly ready to push and was offered paracetamol! My baby was born within 15 minutes of being offered paracetamol for pain relief! I am a nursing sister myself and would be disgusted if my staff treat our patients this way!

Dear Madam I am so sorry to read about your experience of care in the maternity unit at Wansbeck. Your description of the care your received and how you felt is not something we would ever want for any of patients. I am saddened that what should have been a very special and happy time for both you and your husband has involved you feeling not listened to and at times left alone to fend for yourself and your baby. Due to the anonymous nature of your review it is very difficult for me to discuss the nature of your care in a personal manner. We are always keen to learn about what we need to do to improve care and so I would very much welcome the opportunity to discuss your care with you. If this is something that you feel would be helpful, please email me at Annie.laverty@northumbria-healthcare.nhs.uk I do hope that now you are home, both you and your husband are truely enjoying the arrival of your new baby daughter. Best Wishes Annie
