I had my fourth baby at the L&D and was looking forward to using the MLBU (Midwifery Led Birthing Unit). however, i had the most awful experience along with the most awful care for the midwives. My waters had broken on a Monday morning and i was told to keep an eye on my baby's movements and contractions, as I was contracting but not regularly enough. The midwife told me to come back when pain is stronger and closer and there was risk of infection if left too late. I returned later that evening with stronger contractions, much closer and painful. I felt i needed gas with each contraction when it did happen. The midwife who saw me was awful as she didn't care and showed no human compassion. I told her my babies are quick but she ignored me and was ready to send me home - despite slightly high BP and temp and no waters. I insisted i stay on the wards so i went up to wards and my husband sent home. Within an hour and a half my pains were 2minutes apart and lasting for 2minutes. I was being rushed down to delivery suite, however, had the baby on a bed in the corridors with my bottoms still on. My worst feeling of all was that my husband was sent home despite my pleas of keeping him with me to see me through my pain. I had no - one sit with me and comfort me as they had no time. we live 15minutes away from the hospital and thats with clear traffic. I told midwife this is baby number 4 it will be quick but no-one listened. i felt like a child in a school who couldn't speak up as no-one was prepared to listen. It emotionally affected me that my husband was not there for the birth or to comfort me in my hardest time of life. The hospital took everything away from me to make my experience the most awful one. Thankfully, baby and I are both fine, but the system failed us both very badly as no care was offered despite my cries. The midwife in delivery suite was horrible and didn't listen to a mothers instinct - she seemed as though she didn't want to be there. Her head was stuck in making notes and pushing me out of a very quiet delivery suite. She had all the signs, my pains were close all I wanted to do was sit on the toilet (baby's head descending) and the pains were hard but she took gas off me and said its too early to use it. As the midwife on the ward gave me gas saying its never too early the gas works with my pain - which it did! In some respects I am glad I didn't have the other midwife deliver my baby as she was awful and i would have been scared and uncomfortable throughout my labour. Awful experience - and worse thing is I have been told to consider a home birth for next time as oppose to the hospital taking charge and making sure nonsense like this don't happen again. A woman in labour with her fourth child to be turned away is awful - the hospital should count their lucky stars that all went well otherwise they could have a legal battle on their hands. No mother should go through this.
