"Five months in Hospital..."

About: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as the patient),

In late May 2011 I was admitted to Hospital in Norwich. I was diagnosed as having GBS - Guillain Barre Syndrome. My bodies anti-bodies had started to attack my system resulting in paralysis. I was unlucky and had an extreme case. I was bed ridden, unable to do anything for myself. Luckily my respiratory system was unaffected. The staff and facilities were superb. This was a comfort to my family as well. I lost about four stones in weigh and was told that to help aid my recovery I should eat more than I normally would. This is where we have the problem.....

I'm sure somewhere there is a very highly paid manager who made the case to reduce catering staff. I'm also sure that if you make life too comfortable there will be some people who abuse the system and treat the hospital as a free hotel.

However there are others. I was lucky, my wife would go to the supermarket every evening and get me something edible. That leaves another group of people, and there are a lot of them. If anything needs looking at it's Hospital Food. Celebrity chefs aren't the solution either.

We are sorry that you feel the hospital catering service did not meet you needs during your stay with us. We have made a number of changes since 2011 and these include:

- A new fresh fruit service has been introduced which offers in-patients a choice of two pieces of fresh fruit everyday

- Catering staff have been taking part in customer service training

- Our menus have been reviewed and we are producing more food in-house

- The choice of drinks on offer has been widened to include hot chocolate and milk shakes.
