"Very dissapointed with treatment or lack of it"

About: Colchester General Hospital

Anything else?

I came in with my mother in law who had a severe reaction on her skin, both the receptionist and triage nurse were very concerned and helpful. But on reaching the doctor she was totally dismissive firstly asking why we had attended A&E with a rash and pointing out that she needed a dermatologist which we know, I understand she was busy but she didn't seem prepared to listen at all. But mum phone distressed and upset as she lives alone we travelled down from London and on seeing her and the fact she had deteriorated so quickly we felt A&E was our only option. Mum had been taking a medication that has instructions on them to seek medical advise should you have any rash etc. but we never had a chance to tell the doctor this as she was rushing off to another case. Just telling us that she should attend the dermatology appointment that she had coming up. I felt that this is just not good enough no one especially the elderly should be treated this way, other elderly patients were left on trolleys way up the corridor alone, surely if they were near to others waiting at least they could join in conversations or gain comfort from others that are waiting too. In the waiting area there was patches of blood on the floor, the receptionist called a cleaner, he mopped but missed most of the blood that was on the floor.

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. We would like the opportunity to discuss your experiences more fully and to apologise in person. If you are willing I would appreciate it if I could ask the matron to contact you. Could you email me, using the reference “Accident and emergency services at RDEE4-Colchester General Hospital at 07/10/2013 ”, please? Many thanks Paul Searle, Head of Communications Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust info@colchesterhospital.nhs.uk
