About: Bristol Eye Hospital

Anything else?

I have been suffering with sore, burning, swollen eyes for about a year. I have been told There is something different wrong ay every optition I have been too so it is hard to know exactly what is wrong with my eyes. I have tried many different treatments and none of them have been successful which is why my current optition recommended Bristol eye hospital. I live about 40 minutes away from Bristol so having to book a taxi plus waiting time was going to be expensive, however I was happy to do this so long as I had a successful trip and found the right treatment to manage my problem. The consultant I saw was so rude. He literally looked through one screen to decide what the problem was. I found this strange as previously I had experienced having other tests done and this was only in the optitions! he told me I had bletharitus not dry eye condition like I had been told the last time I was at the optitons! He was rude about the fact that I mentioned this to him and wouldn't explain to me why this was from looking at my eyes. He suggested I use lid care wipes which I had previously used and they irritate my eyes. I asked if there was anything I could use instead or if they continued to irriate my eyes this time should I still use them ? he responded by saying ' this is what I recommend so you can take it or leave it' very helpful!! He also suggested someone else doing the treatment because I told him y eyes were very sensitive?! He then continued to add insult to the injury by telling me I had acne because of having two spots and told me this could affect my eyes but didn't give me any suggestions in treating it. I feel this man was very dismissive, and unreassuring and unsympathetic. When Iasked him further questions about treatment he put me down and tried to make me feel stupid. I am a young woman who has been suffering with my eyes for over a year and obviously have concerns over them. Considering I paid to come all the way to Bristol and back I am angry and frustrated that I wasn't listened to properly or respected as a patient!! I don't feel like somebody like this should be 'caring' for patients in the NHS! Also there was a young man that I wasn't asked whether it was ok for him to be in the room whilst I was there and who interrupted our conversation!!

Thank you for taking the time to post a comment on NHS Choices. Your experience does not reflect the standard of care we expect our patients to receive and we are very sorry that this happened to you. It is important that we have the chance to carry out some further investigations so that we can discuss your experience with the individuals involved and ensure that this doesn’t happen again. We would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Complaints and Support Team on 0117 342 3604 or email pals@uhbristol.nhs.uk so that we can do this. Our Patient Support team will also be able to arrange for you to have a further discussion with a clinician about your condition and treatment, if you would like to do so. Thanks again for taking the time to tell us about your experience.
