"Being moved from ward to ward"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Medicine Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

7 days

6 beds

5 Wards

One of these moved occurred at 1am from a ward to a glorified corridor in the oncology day ward.

This move occurred to a patient who was fasting from midnight in preparation for a scan & possible surgery the following day in spite of objection from a concerned relative. Furthermore the patient was awoke with the patients belongings stacked at her feet & at her side on the bed in readiness for the move at 11pm and on morphine due to extreme pain.

When the concerned relative enquired if the patient could object to the move was told that yes but it would involve the bed manager & the duty manager which would be a hassle. Furthermore the moral burden of moving was also given to the concerned relative to assist in the dissuasion to objection.

Dear EenyMeenyDiagnosis

Thank you for using Patient Opinion. I have just posted a reply to other concerns and am wondering if this is the same care episode/same person that you have referred to within that posting.

What you describe is wrong on so many levels and I would like to offer both my sincere apologies and deep concern for what has happened here. We are aware that there are times when it becomes necessary for people to move within our hospitals, but also acutely aware that this should be avoided where possible and/or kept to an absolute minimum.

It should never be a "hassle" for anyone or their relative who uses our services to speak with a senior manager when they have concerns about the quality of care and I am very sorry that this was said.

If you can make contact with me, I will make sure that the serious concerns raised are reviewed as a matter of urgency by a senior manager.

Professor Craig A White

Assistant Director, Healthcare Governance

NHS Ayrshire and Arran

Update posted by EenyMeenyDiagnosis (a relative)

I am extremely satisfied having spoken with Professor White that he will seek to put things in place such that nobody else has to face such an experiance.

I have every confidence in his sincerity & trust that through the feedback I have provided and his ongoing commitment to patient centred care my faith may be fully restored in the care at Crosshouse Hospital.
