"care or lack of"

About: Raigmore Hospital

(as the patient),

Recently had to spend the night in Raigmore after an operation on my hand. Had to be there at 8 am and never went down for op till tea time. I understand that people with emergency situations have to be dealt with first but no one came to tell me what was going on at all.

After operation I asked for water I hadn't had a drink for 14 hours the care assistant said yes, I'll just get it for you. After waiting an hour my friend went and bought one from the vending machine.

The next morning breakfast arrived. It was put down and the girl just walked away. My hand was in a full cast, how I was expected to open containers or butter rolls is beyond me.

Went down later that afternoon to see the OT who both were fantastic at their job and explained things brilliantly.

I never got out the hospital until 4.00pm. I asked the nurse if she would arrange patient transport because I live 50 miles from the hospital and was worried about getting connections. Also I have serious Epilepsy and was quite drowsy due to medication.

Also on the ward before I was discharged there was an elderly man with a full catheter bag full of urine it was a night bag so you can imagine how full it was. He had a knee operation but was expected to empty it himself.

I work in a care setting and if I showed the level of care shown to me and others in my ward I would be sacked.

Dear leeroy01

I am really sorry to hear that you have had such a poor experience while in our care. Apart from the OT and Physio being "fantastic" we have let you down on a number of things. We are really keen to learn from feed-back and I am grateful to you for bringing this to our attention through Patient Opinion.

I would like to assure you that our Clinical Director for Raigmore has read your comments and he is now looking into the matter with Senior Nursing colleagues. If you were able to confirm which ward that would be particularly helpful. And if you felt able to tell me your name then that will help us look at the matter in more detail. But I appreciate you may not feel comfortable doing this.

We will post our full response as soon we find out more. In the meantime I would like to apologise and offer you the opportunity to meet or speak with senior colleagues in Raigmore. If you want to get in touch with me you can do so by phone 01463 704752; or email maimie.thompson@nhs.net
