"Having surgery as an adult for the first time"

About: Birmingham Children's Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Royal Orthopaedic Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Two years ago I had some plates and screws fitted into my leg at Birmingham Children's Hospital. The staff there were amazing. But last week I had to have the plates and screws removed at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

This was my first adult surgery and I was feeling very nervous. The staff were incredible at making me feel relaxed as my mum wasn't around to do that anymore.

They made sure I didn't feel lonely at any time and were extra attentive knowing that I was nervous and scared. I owe them a huge amount of respect and have a lot of admiration for them.
