"Breastfeeding support"

About: Mansfield & Ashfield NHS Mansfield and Ashfield CCG

(as a friend),

I have a friend who really struggled with breastfeeding her first child. Eventually she managed to find a peer-supporter (who was brilliant) who helped a lot. However if more breastfeeding support/advice were available in the first place, it would save a lot of stress and worry, that would obviously be so much better for Mum and Baby. I feel that breastfeeding support needs to be more proactive and much more widely advertised. This needs support. We need more help for our young Mums, please. Ashfield/Nottinghamshire area.

It is good to know your friend was able to find the support she needed from one of Sure Start's peer breastfeeding supporters. The peer supporters are volunteers from the local area who have had specialist training to help them give appropriate advice. Ashfield has a good number of peer supporters but I know they could be used more efficiently.

I can see from your feedback that the service they offer needs to be advertised better. We ensure all midwives and health visitors have up to date information but there is more scope to use other media or places to advertise. Any suggestions would be gratefully received-particularly in relation to young mums. I will ask our Health Improvement Practitioner (who is a trainer for the breastfeeding peer supporters) if he will look at how we advertise the service. One new development already underway is the recruitment of Peer Support Coordinators funded by Mansfield and Ashfield CCG who will be working in the local area to support more families to breastfeed.

I hope your friend continues to have a positive experience in breastfeeding - I am sure the Peer Supporter she has been in contact with will remain in touch as long as she is needed
