"Surgery on the Day ward"

About: Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

Anything else?

I had to have internal Hemorrhoidectomy surgery at the day ward of shrewsbury hospital recently. I was a little concerned about what to expect as having visited the hospital with my wife for different things over the past 4 yrs we have come to the conclusion that one of the biggest letdowns depends on which area of health problems you have and the attitude of some of the consultants. Having said that I have just had Hemorrhoidectomy surgery and I was admitted on the day ward . From the time that I went in at 7.30 am in the morning I could not fault the nursing staff that worked on that ward. They looked after me and could not do enough for me , within a short time of my arrival they put me at ease. Also I could not fault My consultant either, he explained everything to me and told me what to expect as a Hemorrhoidectomy is very painful surgery and it can pose some nasty complications. The only possible fault that i could find regarding Shrewsbury hospital on this occasion was when I had to attend for a pre- op assessment a week earlier and although my appointment was 11am , it was 2hrs of waiting before I was assessed, I do not blame the nursing staff for this, this was due to there not being enough nursing assessment staff and too many patients for them to handle in the time limit they had.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience of haemorrhoidectomy in the day surgery department at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. We're sorry to hear about the delays at pre-op, but really pleased to hear that the nursing and consultant team involved in your procedure looked after you so well, put you at ease and explained everything clearly. These things are so important as this can be an anxious time - and you mention that your wife has had some problems with the attitudes of consultants in the past (NHS Choices does not share your contact details with us, but if there are any particular issues you or she would like to share so that we can use this in training and appraisal please consider writing to our PALS team).
