"Lack of triage in A and E Dept"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 21-23)

(as a relative),

My grandson who is 23 months old had climbed out of his cot and obviously broken his arm. We arrived at A and E at 1. 30 with him crying very loudly, in pain. I was told to sit in the waiting area. After 30 minutes of crying, he fell into an exhausted sleep. It was a full hour after that before we were called to the next waiting area and saw a nurse for the first time. After that the treatment we got was faultless and my grandson was admitted to York hill the next day to have his arm set under anesthetic. I think it's really bad that although the arm was obviously broken and he was in pain, we did not see anyone with medical training for 90 minutes. Eight adults had been called in front of us. Where was the triage nurse and why was my grandson not given some kind of pain relief? ? ? ?

Dear Concerned Gran,

I was very sorry to read that you were unhappy with the time you waited for your grandson to be seen by a clinician when you took him to the RAH A&E department recently.

Without knowing some of the details it is difficult to comment specifically on the circumstances and the pressures within the department at the time, but I can readily appreciate that this was an anxious and worrying time for you, your grandson and the rest of your family.

If you want to have the circumstances looked at in detail I will happily do so, if you email me on paul.cannon@ggc.scot.nhs.uk with further detail I can look into this for you.

In the meantime, I was however pleased to read that once he was seen he appears to have been treated quickly and I also hope that he has gone on to make a good recovery from his recent tumble.

Once again thank you for your feedback; I will share this with the manager responsible for that service so that she is aware of your experience.

Paul
