"CCU and Ward 24"

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital

Anything else?

After having been rushed into Scunthorpe General folllowing a heart attack i was placed firstly on CCU and then moved to ward 24. Whilst on CCU i cannot fault the care and treatment given by the nursing staff, nothing was too much trouble for them, the wards were spottlessly clean, infact my only complaint would be that it was too hot in the ward ( it was the middle of the summer heat wave and the air con is innadequate for the ward) However........ As my treatment progressed i was moved from CCU down to ward 24, this is wher things started to go wrong, the staff were "too busy" to deal with patients, sometimes a nurse was not seen from breakfast until lunchtime, and then it was only because they had to give out tablets, some of the nursing staff gave the imoression that you were simply an inconvenience to them and were more interested in taklking to each other then you, in fact quite often a conversation would be had over me about what they were doing that night. the ward can only be described as dirty, prior to us being moved into that ward it had been deep cleaned, unfortunatley for the next two days the cleaner decided that as it had been deep cleaned it didnt really need much of a clean so would manage to mop the floor in approximately 10 seconds, when she eventually did mop the floor the mop was only placed in the bucket one (prior to starting to mop the floor), the entire floor was mopped before the mop was againf placed in the bucket. One patient in this ward obviously should not have been placed here as he needed more care than the nursing staff were able to give him on the ward, he was spitting on lthe floor, obviously confused and walking around waking other patients at night and standing in the ward and urinating on the floor, not really something that patients with hearty conditions need to be happening around them. This was never cleaned up properly, all that was ever done is the floor was wiped with a towel and left, sometimes puddles of urine would be left upto an hour before cleaning it up, with nursing staff walking through it regulary and spreading it throughout the ward. Communication between consultants and departments is shocking, my treatment fell through the cracks in the system meaning that i was not given all of the information required when making desicions, resulting in arguments between myself and consultants regarding my care, (not something that really nreeds to bee happening when you have a heart condition. Would i recommend this hospital.......No!

Thank you for taking the time to comment on here. Please could I ask you to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service on (01724) 290132? We will then be able to look into the issues you have highlighted. Kind regards, Sarah Mainprize
