About: Leicester General Hospital

Anything else?

My husband was admitted to ward 29 as an emergency , from the minute we arrived there to the minute we left the ordeal was an eye opener to say the least .We were left sitting for over two hours in the corridor of the ward from around 10pm and in this time no one even acknowledged we were there let alone made sure my husband was ok during his wait , which we understand at times can't be avoided .From then on the standards of care were very poor , communication is horrendous no one seems to know what is going on and isn't interested in finding out for you , I stood at the reception desk waiting to talk to a nurse and of the 3 that were sat there not one even made eye contact with me and eventually I gave up ! after his surgery they decided that around 4am would be a good time to move him to a different ward , just what you want a few hours after surgery to be woken up and moved in the early hours ,later that day a consultant came and informed us that the op they carried out was different to what he was admitted for and it had taken them a day later to bother to tell him this and the new problem was a lot more serious than the old one . they dis charged him later that day even after we told them how much pain he was in and the surgery area was very red and inflamed but they were in a hurry to get him out . A few days later he was admitted with a serious infection and had to be operated on again . once again care was terrible , some nurses couldn't even speak clear English so made it hard to communicate and everything such a chore for them , I did a lot of people watching while sitting by his bed and couldn't believe the attitudes towards patients , particually the elderly and non English speaking ones from English staff , no respect for them at all and at some points very degrading for them . One night another patient had to turn off another patients drip alarm as it had been going off for about 15 mins and no nurse had come to turn it off . My husband asked for painkillers at 10.30pm and again at 11.30 pm and got them at 7am the next morning . I was lied to by nurses that basically just want you to go away about my husbands treatment and scans etc that were supposed to be taking place , they led us to believe he could go for a ct scan on a particular day when in fact there was absolutely no chance of it happening as it was the weekend not forgetting you have to be nil by mouth. It was impossible to see or speak to consultants or surgeons and when your scared and unsure of what's going on this is an important part of the care you need . I really could go on for much longer but I think that gets the main concerns across . I do have to praise one particular nurse there, they were a star and a welcome face after our other experiences . We just hope we never have to experience that ward again !
