I accompanied my grown up daughter to ED after being advised to attend there because the Walk In centre doesn't have an x-ray facility. It certainly wasn't an emergency and I knew we'd be in for a longish wait in the minor injuries area. The 'estimated time' to see the nurse/doctor was displayed on the large TV screen along with rolling Sky News but the times frequently bounced up and down anywhere between 19 minutes and 132 minutes so they didn't really mean anything - we were seen after about 120 minutes! Please don't go to ED unless it is an emergency - there were far too many of us who didn't really need to be there. GP appointment next time.

We introduced the waiting time figures on our TV screens last year in direct response to patient feedback. The times are based on the average time to be seen for the last three patients and therefore the times can change in a short space of time depending on how busy the department is.

We work with our health and social care partners throughout the year to encourage patients to choose the right service for their treatment.

Thank you for reminding everyone that the Emergency Department is for those who require the most urgent treatment. There are alternative facilities where health advice can be sought and minor injuries and illnesses can be treated, notably GPs, walk-in centres, pharmacies and the 111 number.
