"Improving patient safety"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as a staff member),

Our pre-operative assessment department has a group of staff who all start their shifts at different times, therefore it has been difficult to try to introduce a safety huddle at the start of the day.

So, we have decided to try to do a written message on our communications board for all staff members to look at and ensure we are all working towards the same aim.

Early days but so far it has served not only as a safety huddle but also as an opportunity to deliver a motivational comment which is good for team morale.

Thank you for sharing your thinking about how best to introduce this patient safety essential into the pre-operative assessment department. It's great that you are trying out ways of sharing information with all of the team, something I am sure you will be able to refine and test further - possibly including a huddle that takes place when all the people who are contributing to the care process are on shift?

As you will see from http://www.sehd.scot.nhs.uk/mels/CEL2013_19.pdf this work is one of the NHS Scotland's Patient Safety Essentials and, as such, is something we want to support you to take forward. If you could get in touch with D.Smith@aapct.scot.nhs.uk then we can look at ways of supporting you and the team.

Best wishes

Craig White

What a great use of Patient Opinion. I'm encouraged by your willingness to test an important change in your own environment and by your desire to share it more widely. Other Boards and wards will be facing the same or similar challenges and your experience will help them.

Please share your progress with the SPSP programme manager in your Board so we can share more widely.
