Anything else?
I was very nervous and apprehensive about surgery, particularly at a time when the NHS was so much in the news. The day of the surgery I initially went to the ward but I was shown to the correct area by a nurse, all checks were carried out by the nursing staff and the nurse kindly gave me two gowns as I did not bring a dressing gown. I was seen by the surgeon who explained what was going to be done, although this was very quick ! The whole process was so quick, as soon as a family member left to go home, I was called to the operating room, where my consultant was with the surgeon, I remember checks being done and then I awoke in the recovery room. The consultant and surgeon came to see me once i awoke and said it all went ok and showed me some pictures. I felt very slightly nauseous and the nursing staff gave me something straight away. I was taken to the ward where I stayed overnight. The evening staff and night staff were very good, coming around regularly for observations, while attending other patients who were in more need than I. They gave me required medicine on time and were attentive to my needs, although I did have trouble getting onto the bed pan and found this hardest part during the night. The were quick to request more IV fluid, as slightly dehydrated. I would recommend this hospital and glad I was not having my treatment at Northwick Park !! The following day I went home, slightly stiff but feeling ok. The only thing I would change is more time and information on pre-op procedures, I know they are everyday occurrences, but I never saw my scan, even when I requested it, only to be told it had been archived and this was before the operation. The alternatives to surgery and more information in general, my initial consultation was not very long or detailed and I did request another appointment so I could get more information and understanding. Also more post-op info, such as what to expect, although a pre-op leaflet on procedure was given, at pre-op assessment. Overall I was impressed and would recommend this hospital, thank you to the whole team, pre-op, consultant /surgeon, the recovery staff who were very good and nurses on my ward were also good. I felt I wasn't in a rush to free a bed.
