"I very much appreciated continuity ..."

About: St James's University Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I very much appreciated continuity of nursing care on the ward. As staff worked long shifts and were allocated to specific bays they got to know the patients, so much so that some nurses advocated on my behalf. Some nurses has worked on the ward for several years and were clearly experts in nursing my condition.

What could be improved

There was great pressure on beds and bed spaces. It was a bit unsettling to wait until 4.40 pm to be given the go-ahead for admission that day for major surgery the next and worrying to spend six hours in theatre recovery uncertain whether a bed would be found for me on the right ward. I didn't like being asked to give up my bed and move to makeshift sleeping arrangement in a day unit the night before discharge, when I was in a lot of pain and with very limited mobility (I declined to move).
