"Our wonderful son"

About: Royal Stoke University Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

After visiting the Doctors in late April, our son was told to go directly to the hospital for a scan. He was then transferred to ward 109 where he sat on a chair for over 12 hours.

He was operated on the following day and went into a side ward on 109. 2 days later he waited over 2 hours for the nurse to administer his pain killer. The nurse kept turning the buzzer off. There was blood on the floor and the cleaner told us not to move as she would clean round us. There was also discharge on the bed all day. The ward was very hot so we took our own fan in. Our son had to keep asking for water.

The next day he went into SSCU ward. 2 days later he had a very high temperature and the nurse gave us flannels to cool him down. No other help seemed to be offered. The next day a urine bag which was attached to a catheter burst all over his legs and feet.

On the following day, our wonderful son very sadly passed away. I am very disgusted at the treatment he received at this hospital.

Dear Abbo,

I am very sorry to read of your son’s experiences in the days before he passed away at University Hospital of North Staffordshire. From the details you have shared with us on Patient Opinion it is very clear that the standards of care your son received fell far below what he should have expected.

Please could you contact me on 01782 676622 as I would like to listen to your first-hand account of what happened. In the meantime, can I offer my sincere condolences to you and your family for the sad loss of your son.

Yours sincerely,

Elizabeth Rix, Chief Nurse
