"Don't take children to this hospital"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

Anything else?

Whilst walking along the beach on Sunday 11th August 2013 my 5 year old daughter was bitten on the face by a dog, due to blood and screaming we were all in shock, but for excellent help from the RNLI we went the short distance home and phoned the NHS help line who informed us to take her to north Tyneside hospital and she would be seen under a hour we arrived at the hospital around 8 pm. We booked into A&E and sat down it was not busy, after half hour my daughter was assessed and I was told that their was a childrens waiting room around the corner were we could sit, there is nothing in it the tv does not work no toys and a old computer game is not in English. We waited 2 more hours before I asked a member of staff, what is happening as the place was filling with drunks and numerous people coming in with a police escort, not what I want my 5 year old daughter to see. After waiting more time we saw a doctor who was very good, and she was given advice and tablets and we left around 11.30pm. This is not good enough, there is nothing in place to tell us waiting times or for children to play with.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I can understand how distressing and stressful the situation must have been for you both. A clinic that is running late can be very frustrating and I am so sorry that this was the case for you. I appreciate this can only have added to the stress you were both experiencing that day. Direct patient feedback such as this enables us to respond in the moment and is very helpful. After reading your review I went to down the children’s waiting area in A&E to have a look and I agree that it is definitely in need of some new toys. We intend to submit a bid to the next meeting of the charitable funds group to allow us to purchase some news toys for the waiting area and I should hope that it will be well received. I am really pleased to hear that the care that your daughter received from the doctor was very good and I will ensure that your comments are shared with the team. I hope that your daughter is recovering well at home. Best Wishes Annie Laverty – Director of Patient Experience
