"Might be clean but the Care is appalling"

About: Harrogate District Hospital

Anything else?

My partner drove me to A&E because of the excruciating pain I was in, I could barely stand and walking was difficult. He then had to go because we had no money on us, no phone and the kids were alone so had to go back home. The Doctor diagnosed a urinary tract infection and a fissure. I was given anti-biotics and told to eat fruit and informed I could go. What the Medics didn’t realise is I overheard them outside my cubicle saying they didn’t have the right medication in A&E to treat me. As I got dressed crying in pain I had to disturb a conversation with 7 Medics to ask them how to get a taxi home. They pointed in a direction as I held onto every piece of wall and furniture in order to get to reception without falling or fainting. Not one of them helped me or gave me any pain relief. My pain was off the Richter scale, tears streaming down my face and shaking. The Taxi driver was the only person that helped me. I knew it was more serious and that fruit was not going to fix my pain so I booked an appointment three hours later with my local GP. She diagnosed the worst case of Shingles she had seen in years and when she said I must be in horrendous pain, I burst into tears. I went home with 29 tablets to take each day for 7 days. Three days later and I’m on the mend and eternally grateful to my GP. Harrogate Hospital is a shambolic example of the NHS and I would drive 100 miles rather than see my family ever receive such appalling treatment. Don’t worry I won’t sue you but I hope the Medics are ashamed of themselves. If I was an elderly patient I’m sure my heart would have given up with the pain and stress I was in and the lack of care. I felt like I was making up the pain until my Dr recognised it. I'm sure you'll have a great response and excuse but it will never change my first hand experience, which was on such a quiet day for A&E. I wonder how they treat patients on busy days!

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback, which we greatly value. I am very sorry to learn of your experience and that the care you describe was not up to the high standards we would expect. It is certainly not acceptable to us for a patient to be left in pain and not to be offered assistance. Please accept our sincere apologies for the experience that you have set out. We would very much like to investigate what happened to you in detail. To do so, we would be grateful if you could contact our Patient Experience Team with your name, contact details and the date of your treatment so that we can find out exactly what happened to you and why. The Patient Experience Team can be contact on (01423) 555499 or email thepatientexperienceteam@hdft.nhs.uk Thank you again for contacting us and I apologise for the experience you say you had.
