Unfortunately in October last year I suffered a miscarriage, I returned home after the news but developed severe pain. I had rang the hospital twice from home and waited over 3 hours for a doctor call back. Although after my scan and being told my baby had died i was advised I had open access to the ward the nurse who took my information over the phone told me not to come in. I began to lose a lot of blood in the lift and was covered by the time I got to a side room for examination. I was given no gown at this point and was covered in blood. It took 3 hours for the decision to be made to keep me on the ward and during this time I was left in a room on a table with no toilet in the room. I was given numerous pain medications as the pain would not ease and despite being given tablets to bring on the evacuation this was not working. Initially the staff wanted to discharge me. I was unable to walk due to the pain. I was given toilet bowls to pass the blood and eventually baby into which was traumatic. Even worse I had to take the baby and bowl to find a nurse as none had been checking on me at this point. I must stress at this point I met one amazing nurse who was previously a renal nurse who was the kindest most compassionate nurse I have met. She could see the amount of pain I was in and queried the doctors decision to not re-examine me. she pushed for another consultation and found that blood clots were stuck which was causing the pain. The doctors manually removed these and immediately the pain began to ease. The nurse stayed with me and continuously checked I was ok. i was at this point given morphine and IV medication and was able to sleep. Unfortunately i woke to the sound of crying as a newborn baby was placed with its mother in the room opposite me whilst I was miscarrying adding to the distress. Although i can not fault the kindness of this one nurse and a student nurse on the day shift when I first came to the ward, The attitude of the rest of the staff was vile. I overheard one nurse complaining that I was 'over dramatic and demanding' during the handover. This was not the case i was in immense pain despite the medication I was given. During this time my phone had died and I had no means of contacting anyone. i asked the staff if they could check my medical records for my partners or mums number but they said they could not see this on their system and refused to go to the maternity department to get the contact numbers. The following morning I was left for 4 hours with not one observation. It was only down to a friendly domestic assistant that I was given a clean gown and she went to the trouble of asking other staff members if they had a phone charger I could borrow so I could contact my family. I was horrified by the whole experience and could not believe the poor treatment what made this more astounding was at the time I myself was a student nurse.
