In a time when everything you read, see or hear about our social & health care services is negative, I am writing to compliment the staff of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary’s Ward 23 and the Medical Assessment Unit, for their care not only of my mother but the other patients in their wards. Having spent a lot of time over the past month or so ( Mum was admitted on July 6th) visiting the RLI in conversations with ward staff it is apparent their knowledge of the patient and observation of their excellent personal care practices, including nutrition and hydration is exemplary. Mum’s end of life palliative care was exceptional, not only for Mum, but the concern the staff had for the immediate family during this sad time, prompting us to eat, drink and rest where possible. Throughout the palliative care period the information we were given about the various stages, the changes in medical status were clear, plus always with the option to ask or indicate any further concerns regarding Mum’s condition or seek assistance. During the palliative care period, I was from a professional stance able to observe the excellent levels of care for the other patients on the ward (24 hours a day) - their personal care, nutritional care needs including the supported / assisted feeding were met and encouraged. I would like to credit and hope you recognise the good work that every body on the ward contributed to delivering this high standard of care, from the domestic staff who kept the ward clean to all the nursing staff delivering the care, they are a credit not only to the RLI but to the NHS in general. The ward staff were not aware that between two of us, there is over forty years of experience within the care sector, closely observing their every move with Mum in particular but also picking up on the wider activities on the ward in particular. Please thank the staff once again on our behalf for their fantastic work and keep it up.
"Excellent care provided including end of life"
