"first experience as an in-patient"

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Anything else?

I was very apprehensive about undergoing surgery in Medway hospital due to the latest media reports. On a personal note I was worried about the after effects of the operation due to the nature of the procedure.May I take this chance to say all my worries were allayed. Apart from confusing Sunderland and POCU I was extremely pleased with every aspect of my short overnight stay. Everybody was polite efficient and professional in every aspect.I was told clearly and concisely what was happening and the procedures explained fully and did I have any questions. In my case the treatment was faultless and totally pain free despite having invasive and delicate neck surgery. The whole treatment was perfect and the Anaesthetic(sic) team were brilliant and the skills of the Doctor amazing. The aftercare was also excellent and the nurses and assistant so caring and attentive. It was a suprise to be so alert and capable after the operation that I was able to eat within 2-3 hours of the op.The food I was given was better than a previous meal in a Maidstone pub of some repute!!! Maybe it is part of the process but it is impossible for me to remember the names of the people who cared (exact use of the word) for me.I remember the name of the doctor but it would be unfair to mention his name in isolation only to repeat my gratititude for his skills and manners. I know my operation was not serious but it could have had life-changing consequences of quality of life if it had gone wrong.Everybody must be apprehensive and I must repeat over and over again the Medway Hospital Team were excellent in my case. I used to work for the NHS,not in Medway, and am more aware of system failures that can occur and do occur.I am of the belief that nobody goes to work intent on doing a bad job and that mishaps do occur. It was my experience of Medway hospital that everyone was doing their best and are delivering a high quality service. Not everyone will agree with my input and they may have justification but this was my experience and if it shows that other's fears and doubts can be tempered then so be it I am one of the most cynical, flippant and Victor Meldrew types you will meet.the last two days have mellowed me and i am soooo relieved. A big thank you to Medway Hospital TEAM.
