"Dreadful organisation"

About: University Dental Hospital

Anything else?

I was referred to the Manchester Dental Hospital (MDH) by in February 2013, by Christie's cancer hospital. Having had radiotherapy treatment to my jaw this gave rise to certain complications which required the work of a specialist restorative consultant. An appointment didn't come through and so I chased MDH after a few weeks. I received an appointment, but this was cancelled on the day as the consultant didn't turn in. After complaining to the CEO, I was given an appointment in May to see a restorative specialist and after examination and X-rays, a course of treatment was agreed. No follow up appointment was received. After repeated chasing and complaining I saw a graduate in July who contradicted the treatment of the consultant. Now after 7 months a tooth has split in two and in all probability will need to be extracted, causing further long term complications to the jaw. I have complained yet again, and have been told various managers will contact me, but at the time of writing, none of them have. I have telephone this morning and chased once again. The service is absolutely dreadful and organisation non-existent and 7 months after original referral and not one single procedure has been carried out!

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to learn that your experience of Dental Hospital is not as positive as we would hope. It is important to us that comments are heard and seen as an opportunity provided to the service to make changes and improvements wherever possible.

In response to your comment, I can tell you that the waiting time for treatment is currently between 4-6months due to the high demand for our services. We understand that you have been assessed by a consultant and later a post graduate student where a treatment plan was discussed. Since this appointment you have indicated that you are unhappy with the treatment plan put forward by the Post Graduate student and therefore another appointment has been made for you to see the Restorative Consultant as you have requested. Unfortunately, it did take longer than we would like to arrange this appointment as an extra date needed to be arranged for you to be seen by the Consultant.

We would like to wish you all the best for any future treatment you are to receive at the Dental Hospital.

It is difficult to respond to all the posts in a full way often because of a lack of detailed information, therefore if you would like to discuss this with us in more detail, please feel free to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk
