"Podiatry and diabetes"

About: NHS Ayrshire & Arran

(as the patient),

I have diabetes type 2. I have been told that I will no longer be entitled to podiatry treatment to prevent ingrowing toenails. If and/or when my toenails become ingrown, then they will be removed. I take good care of my feet and check them every day. I have thus become a victim of my own success. I only used the service 3 or 4 times a year for about 10 minutes per session. The final thing I was told was that I could always go private. This change to the podiatry service flies in the face of the government's recently announced project to cut down the number of amputations due to diabetes complications. They are only going to deal with serious infections instead of taking steps to prevent them in the first instance.

Dear Vida

Many thanks for using Patient Opinion to share your concerns relating to your recent contact with the Podiatry Service.

I have passed this to our Head of Podiatry for his review. It might be helpful to have a chat with him about this recent experience and, if you would like to arrange this, please contact me at craig.white@aapct.scot.nhs.uk so that this can be arranged.

I will also arrange for some background information to be collated to outline details of any changes made to the podiatry services, providing explanation and importantly ensuring that you feel informed and empowered to continue with the successful self-management you have described. Supported self management is crucial and I understand that it is this you would like us to review in further detail.

I hope that this initial response is helpful and confirms the value and importance that we place on considering the issues you have taken the time to raise with us.

Best wishes

Craig White

Dear Vida,

I wanted to update you on discussion with our Head of Podiatry Services since my acknowledgement message of earlier this month. He would very much like to arrange a meeting to discuss your concerns, including your individual treatment and care plan.

Our podiatry services are undergoing redesign in according with the definitions of 'core' podiatry services that are part of Scottish Government Personal Footcare Guidance to be launched next week. This includes care for some people assessed as low risk of experiencing complications being provided through self-management or with the involvement of family and/or carers. This results in the clinical staff being able to provide more time to people with significant risks to prevent complications from happening or to respond swiftly to people who have active ulceration.

I hope that this further information is of use and that you will consider making personal contact so that our offer of listening personally to your concerns, supporting discussions and re-considering your care and treatment needs can be arranged.

Yours sincerely

Craig White

I was pleased to hear that you had the opportunity to meet in person with our Head of Podiatry. I hope that this was helpful in discussing your concerns, as well as emphasising the important we place on listening to what matters most to the people of Ayrshire and Arran. Thank you again for taking the time to use Patient Opinion - I hope that you will again if you ever want to tell us about what has gone well with your experiences, or areas where improvements are required.

Best wishes
