"Good nurses but too few of them"

About: Royal Preston Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat Royal Preston Hospital / General surgery

Anything else?

I had a 7 day stay in Preston recently, on Wards 12 and 3. The nurses were good and did their best but there were too few of them and they couldn't cope with the number of patients they were expected to deal with. This meant the nurse call bell often went unanswered and patients were having to help one another out with trips to the toilet and simple tasks like moving food trays within reach. There was one Uclan student nurse who was fabulous and compassionate so I hope the Trust is able to find money for more auxiliaries and student nurses who can do the simple tasks and take the pressure off the nursing staff. That way, patient care would be better because it is the simple things like being helped to the toilet and being helped to eat and drink that make the biggest difference to the quality of care. I have a specific complaint about the cleaning and I would be obliged if someone from the Trust would provide me the details of how I provide a specific complaint in detail other than on a public forum such as this.

Thank you for providing feedback about the care and treatment we provide. Your comments have been noted and will be reviewed to identify opportunities for improvement and any actions that may be necessary. We have invested 21 additional nurses this spring, as part of a £1.5m investment in the nurse workforce in the past 18 months to increase the level of nursing supoprt on our wards. Cleanliness is something we take very seriously and we are concerned to hear that you have a complaint about this - please do provide further details, you can email customer.care@lthtr.nhs.uk, or you can speak with our PALS team on 01772 522972.
