"Distressing experience in A & E"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford)

Anything else?

The toughest night of my life sitting in a near empty waiting room for nearly 3 hours watching my partner crying her eyes out and doubled over in 10/10 agony while her body was rejecting our baby. Receptionist and triage nurse werent particuarly helpful although another patient who seemed to have been poked In the eye who started shouting his head off about not being seen was quickly assessed and given pain relief!! Maybe I should have done that to get noticed. I had to go up to reception 4 times to find out what was going on and we were only seen after I had to ask to see someone who could give me a straight answer and state that I wasnt going to leave reception until I did. After that we were seen by a helpful and reassuring (although tired looking) doctor. At all times A&E seemed like a production line. I dont know the triage system but it was pretty galling to see a walking healthy looking man in his 70s arrive after this and go straight through to the doc when my partner was clearly in distress. I must compare this with the excellent and sympathetic treatment we received at the centre for womens health where the miscarriage operation was carried out.
