In late May last year, I went into labour ( 2 days late) with my youngest daughter. I was booked at Samuel Johnson midwife led unit. I phoned to tell them I was in labour and they asked a few questions and said I could go straight through. I arrived to be greeted by lovely staff at the entrance who took me through to the ward. They were all so lovely and welcoming, they made us a drink and sat with me to monitor me. All the while checking I was ok. At no point were we just left. They were always on hand.
We decided we wanted our oldest daughter with us, however not at the very end whereby I would be pushing. They welcomed her and showed us where she could wait and watch TV when the time came. They included my husband and daughter in everything.
When they checked baby's heart, they realised it seemed quite high up in my belly for a baby that was head down. And after checking how far dilated I was, they could feel that baby was bum first with her legs stretched up (extended breach). I went into a panic but the midwives kept me calm. They explained that unfortunately I would not be able to deliver at the unit and would need consultant care at Burton. They called for the ambulance to transport me and when he arrived, they travelled with me. They waited with me until she was born by grade 2 caesarean section and they even came back to see me that evening.
The staff at both the Samuel Johnson midwife led unit and Burton were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and I felt highly priveleged to have such wonderful staff involved in the delivery of my baby. I had my first daughter at a different hospital and to compare the 2 were so so different. Anyone that decides to have their baby at Lichfield or Burton has made a great decision. I have never felt so at ease and important in any hospital experience elsewhere.
Amazing is an understatement of how they made myself, my husband and my family feel. They are a credit to their profession: -) and I will definitely recommend them: -)
