"Treatment on ward 1 gynecology at Heartlands"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I visited my gp regarding early pregnancy and pain i had. She contacted ward 1 gynecology who told her to send me up to be examined and for a scan.

I arrived at 4. 30pm and after being seen by a nurse who took a brief history I was left for the next 2 and a half hours in the waiting room. Being there was particularly hard as I had suffered two miscarriages earlier in the year so my experience of this ward hadn't been a happy one.

Whilst I sat waiting to seen I what should have been a sensitive environment the nurse and healthcare assistant were loud laughing and joking amongst them self. I found this very insensitive. Finally after waiting for 2 and a half hours I was seen by a lovely doctor who examined me and then decided to take bloods. I was told I would need to wait the 90 minutes for the results to come back....why the bloods could not have been done when I first arrived I simply don't understand! ! I questioned when I would have a scan and was told that there was nobody there that day trained to scan. This made extremely upset as that would have been the peace of mind I needed. I got very upset and the doctor was lovely its a shame the same cant be said for the nursing staff I came across! !

The doctor tried to contact the registrar to see if I could go home and phone for my blood results however the registrar was in theatre.

At 8. 30pm a night staff nurse came and told me that I needed to wait for my blood results and that the night registrar had said they would scan me when she was done in theatre. Finally a bit of reassuring news.

At 9. 50pm the same nurse told me that the registrar was done in theatre and the the junior doctor was seeing a patient in A and E and then they would both come and scan me. At midnight! ! ! ! !

The two doctors finally turned up and I was scanned. To be told that pregnancy was growing in the correct place but that it also seemed there could be a pregnancy growing outside of the uterus. I was sent home with an appointment 10 days later for another scan. After talking to friends I'm not happy that I was sent home as a pregnancy outside the uterus would suggest ectopic. I phoned up the next morning to query if it was right to leave someone another 10 days if thats possibly the case to be told that on the doctors notes there is no mention of a second pregnancy.

So now I am left in limbo. I feel the service I have experienced from start to finish was poor. Staff laughing and joking a waiting time of 7 and a half hours and for a doctor to tell me one thing and report something else. I would not recommend the ward at all.

My experience of the queen Elizabeth hospital where staff are polite friendly and sensitive to the patients situation instead of treating you as just another number! ! !

Dear Ali250507

I am so sorry you had that experience and have passed your feedback onto our Associate Head of Midwifery. Please be assured this is not the normal standard of service and appropriate step will be taken.

Could I please ask if you can contact me or one of the team in Patient Services to discuss your case on 0121 424 0808.

Kind regards

Iona
