"nurses' treatment of patients at Russells Hall"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as other),

An elderly relative of my partner was hospitalised overnight recently. Don't know the full details or which ward. He buzzed for a nurse during the night as he needed to go to the toilet - so needed a bottle.

When the nurse finally came -he had buzzed a few times and the nurses just ignored him and carried on talking all sat around the station - he was told he couldn't have one, to shut up and go back to sleep. In the end he had to empty a bottle that he had already used and had not been disposed off (good for infection control eh) and reuse said emptied bottle.

He cannot walk unaided and unsteady on his feet at the best of times, and partially sighted. He has not complained because he is in his 80s and really doesn't want the hassle.

What a dignified way to treat anyone let alone some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments about the care of your partner’s elderly relative. We welcome all feedback and would like to assure you that all comments are taken seriously and acted upon as part of our ongoing commitment to improving patient experience.

We are appalled to hear your comments about the attitude and behaviour of some of our nurses and we would appreciate it if you could pass on our sincere apologies to your friend’s relative. We do not accept such rude behaviour towards patients in our care and we would welcome the opportunity to investigate this incident further so that action may be taken. Unfortunately you do not say which ward staff were involved and so we would urge you to get in touch with our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on free phone 0800 073 0510 who will be happy to arrange a meeting with our elderly care nursing leads.
