Anything else?
Consultant, Acute General Medicine. Following admission to the Emergency Assessment Unit I was accepted for an endoscopic investigation by the doctor and then transferred to Ward 7C for recuperation under your supervision. You and your Speciality Registrar, assured my recovery over the next four days with excellent professional judgement tempered with compassionate care. Several aspects of my experience impressed me. I was grateful that the doctor accepted me without notice into their busy clinic schedule on Tuesday morning. That they located and treated a previously undiagnosed ulcer was a job well done in a short period. I was pleased that they called on me later in the week while passing though Ward 7C. A second point is that I was aware that my recovery was driven by the need to raise my blood pressure and stabilise the blood chemistry. That I could get that far in understanding while a bit dozy is testament to your team’s patience in repeating what actions you were taking and why. I enjoyed your ward rounds with students in tow and commend the medical student who took a blood sample with humour and competence. I became aware during my stay of the triple demand being made on you and your colleagues. Dealing with unexpected illness (such as mine), co-ordinating my unplanned demand within a busy clinic schedule (as the doctor accommodated so graciously) and the need to provide care for the elderly and the dying. It felt to me that these demands systematically exceed capacity and yet, not for an instant, did I feel unwelcome or that I was creating a problem. I am most grateful for the excellence of the treatment I received in your care. If there is any other way in which my feedback can be of use to you, do not hesitate to pass on my name to anyone who may wish to understand why I am keen to acknowledge the excellence of your professional work and the compassionate way in which it is delivered. Thank you.
