What I liked

My 16 year old daughter was recently admitted to Ward 1 (children's ward). She received excellent & efficient care from all the staff on the ward. They were very friendly and reassuring which made the whole experience less daunting.

I was also pleased to hear a cheerful voice when I contacted the hospital switchboard...so often these days we are subjected to tedious automated answer services!

What could be improved

Provision of a smoking facility away from the entrance to the hospital...it is not very pleasant to walk through second hand smoke on your way in and out!

A smoking shelter for visitors and patients has been located on the ramp near to A & E since January 2008. This was done reluctantly but felt to be a pragmatic solution to the smokers who continue to flout the Trust no smoking rules outside A & E. This results in cigarette ends and litter, and smoke drifting in to windows and doors. We felt that visitors to A & E are often in stressful situations, though ideally they should not smoke they do and without a 24/7 policy outside the department we will continue to be plagued by litter and drift smoke. Staff are encouraged to tackle smokers at the main entrance and direct them to the smoking shelter.
