Antenatal care was good in some areas - lots of detailed scans and midwife (Hornsea) was excellent. Day clinic at womens and childrens poor - I hated going here. Impersonal never seeing the same person twice - having BP taken in public. Lots of people clogging up the place. Not able to give me any advice specific to twin pregnancy/birth at all - referred me to TAMBA who are excellent. Consultant was excellent but registrar I saw was uncommunicative and did not want to address any of my concerns which were numerous considering the lack of information received - so my advice is to insist on seeing the consultant. Despite being a highly educated person my concerns were basically ignored as I was told that I would not have a section until week 39 - a frightening prospect for a petite size 6 female carrying two large babies - I could barely stand up by week 34 and I had visions of a rupturing uterus and PPH (about which I ended up being correct anyway). Despite being assured over the phone that my condition would be taken into account this was in fact just lip service and it is clear that services are policy driven with no individual tailoring of care. Luckily for me my midwife intervened on my behalf to get the section brought forward. C section didn't go as planned and had PPH - dealt with extremely well in theatre by the team of specialists and my time spent on the labour ward afterwards was excellent - I felt very well looked after and fully informed. Once transferred to the post-natal ward I couldn't wait to leave and I (cynically) think that this is the whole point - ie to move you out asap. On the 3rd morning after the section I developed a horrendous stiff neck, nausea and headache and had to practically beg for pain relief. That same afternoon I was seen by the doctor and despite my concerns and wish to remain on the ward for longer it was clear that this doctor was not leaving until I had been persuaded to be discharged that day. Three days in hospital after abdominal surgery with complications is shocking. If local private care had been available I would have happily pain the money but sadly you are reduced to using the NHS.
