"Member of staff smoking in hospital grounds"

About: North Devon District Hospital

(as the patient),

Female member of staff in blue scrub uniform leaning on fences inside hospital grounds smoking in the afternoon. I thought staff should not smoke in uniform.

Please enforce your own rules!

I hate being treated by staff smelling of cigarettes!

Dear Patient

Thank you for posting your comments regarding a member of staff seen smoking whilst in uniform, within the hospitals grounds. I was very dissapointed to read your concerns, as we do encourage all NHS staff to set an example of good practice to the public with regard to "no smoking". Staff also have a duty to uphold the Trust’s Smoke free policy within the Trust's grounds, and are regularly reminded of this.

You are quite correct in saying that staff should not smoke whilst in uniform, as not only does it present a poor image to the public and colleagues, it also gives a very poor impression as part of a health organisation.

I have shared your concerns with the Trust's Medical Director and can confirm that your feedback will be taken forward. Should you wish to raise any further concerns please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01271 314090 who will be happy to suport you further.

Jayne
