"Opthalmology Appointments and so on"

About: Weston General Hospital

Anything else?

Once again this July my 93-year-old father's opthalmology appointments were cancelled and put back to November - and the double appointment had once again been put on different days (he has a field vision test then sees the consultant). This has happened so many times. On the last occasion, earlier this year, Dad's appointments had again been put on two different days, and even then at the second appointment we had to wait two hours. After that, I insisted that Dad's appointments be put on the same day (as it seems everyone elses were), but this is the appointment that has now been cancelled. On another occasion when his opthalmology appointment was cancelled, in order to get it rescheduled within a reasonable time, I had to take Dad to his optician to have the field vision test carried out, and then take him to his consultant's appointment with the result. On this occasion the hospital has told me that the appointments will be rescheduled for later this month - both on the same day. That was over a week ago and we have heard nothing. We were given just over a week's notice of the cancellation. Why are these appointments constantly being cancelled? I have a severely disabled mother to make arrangements for when I take my father for appointments. If his opthalmology appointments are rescheduled for July, it is not giving me much time to make arrangements. On another matter, my severely disabled mother was "refused" a neurology appointment by Weston hospital at the end of last year, despite being referred for such an appointment by our GP. I put refused in inverted commas because the hospital does not seem to accept that the consultant saying it was "inappropriate" for him to see her, was a refusal. Mum suffered a brain tumour many years ago and her mobility has deteriorated greatly in the last 18 months, so much so that she can now no longer walk a step or even stand without great assistance. That was why we - and our GP - wanted her to have a neurology appointment. I have made a complaint about this matter - it has been ongoing since December!
