"I have had emergency surgery due to the lack of care"

About: North West London Hospitals NHS Trust St Mark's Hospital (Harrow)

(as the patient),

I’ve had problems for the past three years. I visited St Mark’s specialist hospital in London, but had differences with them. I raised concerns I had a number of years ago, but was then thrown out of the hospital. I was reinstated in December 2008 with a new consultant.

I felt that the new consultant overlooked factors related to my health. Certain clinical letters in my history did not state numerous health issues I had. My results were atypical, and the test results were not reflected in these letters. This resulted in certain things being missed by my consultant, such as small ulcers.

I suffer with crohn’s disease. Because of the lack of information, my new consultant was treating me as though I had only a few episodes of ill health, when in reality I had been suffering for a number of years.

Due to these inaccuracies, I contacted the Information Commissioner’s Office. They advised me to write to the medical director at the hospital. I asked for a meeting to reflect the changes in my medical history, a letter which I wrote in early June 2010. The chief executive replied 10 days later. Rather than dealing with these inaccuracies, he referred to the previous problems in 2008, and did not deal with the problems I was facing.

The hospital had made allegations of intimidation and violence, and stated they did not have to deal with me under NHS policy.

During this time, my GP had asked for help; in a letter he complained to the North West London Hospital’s Trust in an attempt to get my records amended.

However, further complications arose and as a result, I ended up getting removed from my local surgery, which resulted in no GP for nine months.

The trust had said that these amendments needed to be done by a medical professional. However, I was in a difficult situation as I was being denied access to a medical professional who could make these changes.

My local MP became involved in July 2010. He felt the response from the trust was inappropriate, so he wrote a letter to the North West London Hospital’s Trust.

My MP asked more questions, to which the trust again referred to the 2008 incident.

I then went to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman due to contact restrictions denying my human rights, and no justification for doing so. However, after my list of numerous reasons and complaints had been assessed, it was narrowed down to three watered down reasons which were not why I was complaining. As a result this did not go anywhere.

The complaints department will not answer my questions unless I am in clinical care. Over the past three years I have had emergency surgery because of crohn’s disease due to the lack of care. I have numerous other health problems and now I feel broken. The trust in my view lied and ruined my reputation.

I must say that the care from the consultant at St Mark’s hospital has been excellent. The issues I have had are due to the management.
