"Breast Cancer Care"

I was diagnosed with Grade 2 Ductal Invasive Cancer in my left breast in May 2013. I had surgery to remove the cancer and had a reconstruction on my right breast at the same time on 17 May 2013.

The surgeon, (Miss Gawne) was absolutely amazing and instilled in me the utmost confidence in her incredible abilities. The care I received on the breast ward at Burnley General Hospital after surgery was fantastic although the food was truly horrendous.

My cancer was upgraded to a grade 3, 3. 8cm tumour when the results came in and I was told I would need chemo, rads and hormone therapy. After spending an hour with my Oncologist (Dr Hogg) discussing treatments and all the possible side effects, we decided that chemo would do me more harm than good and I really felt that I was allowed to make an informed decision guided by my oncologist. My radiotherapy starts in mid July.

I have been supported the whole time by the breast cancer care nurses who have offered me reassurances and advice continually. I have also had a team of ongoing support from the district nurses who are still visiting me twice a week to change the dressing on my unhealing right wound who are efficient and caring.

I also access the local Hospice at Pendleside for day care on a weekly basis and have regular psychotherapy, reflexology, group support, Tai Chi sessions etc and can honestly say that it is the highlight of my week.

I am struggling with the side effects of Tamoxifen at the moment but my BCN is helping me through this.

The whole experience for me has been traumatic but extremely supportive and would like to thank everyone involved in my ongoing care for walking beside me at every step.
