"Patient is not always put first."

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital

Anything else?

Nursing care on the whole very good but on several occasions lacked compassion and was not always dignified. Have been seen by a specialist since leaving hospital who provided me with more effective treatment for my problem and whose advice was very different to that given to me and has vastly proved my health. Spoken to rudely by one if the staff. Some lovely staff but patient is not always put first. Wards generally clean although noticed medical mask hanging from wall by my bed which had been used on patient previously - not me.

Thank you for bringing to our attention the concerns that you experienced regarding your care and treatment at our hospital. The matron for the area will share your concerns in relation to the nursing team with the ward sisters and ask them to discuss these at the next team meeting. This is not how we expect our patients to be cared for and we are sorry that a few of our team let the service down. We are also very sorry that the treatment you received for your orthopaedic problem was not a success but we are pleased that you have been able to access treatment that has helped. We would be pleased to look into your case in detail if you would like to contact our Patient Relations team (0118 322 8338 talktous@royalberkshire.nhs.uk) to log a concern. It is good to hear that some of our nursing team provided you with the care we would expect for our patients and that on the whole you found our hospital to be clean. We are sorry that you found a previously used mask still connected to the oxygen on the wall. The ward staff clean all medical equipment twice daily and after each patient is discharged. Things like this are usually picked up during these times so we are not sure what went wrong on this particular day. The matron will remind the team of the importance of cleaning and removing equipment that is no longer in use. We would like to wish you well in your ongoing recovery and please contact us if you would like us to look into your concerns in more detail.
