"'Not sure if they'll want you to come in yet...'"

About: Colchester General Hospital

Anything else?

The maternity department is lovely, clean and well equipped. However I find it very concerning when you ring for the second time, because your contractions are now three every ten minutes like they said they needed to be, and you then get told. ' oh I'm not sure they'll want you to come in yet, as there's only one midwife. I'll go check!' However I was told to come in and my partner and I arrived at 07:00 and are shown to a birthing suite. We can hear the lady next door who appears to be quite far along. At 09:00 the midwife comes in and apologises that she has not been able to come in before, but the lady next door had just had her baby! The rest of my stay and experience was brilliant and all the midwives were excellent, but I don't feel that anyone should have too wait two hours to be seen! Or advised that they may not want you in yet because there's only one midwife working.

I apologise you’ve not had a good patient experience. We try really hard to improve our services based on the comments we receive from our patients, their relatives or carers. We would like the opportunity to discuss your experiences more fully and to apologise in person. If you are willing I would appreciate it if I could ask the matron to contact you. Could you email me, using the reference “Comment on Maternity service at RDEE4-Colchester General Hospital at 29/06/2013 11:59:40”, please?
