"My one night stay"

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital (Welwyn Garden City)

Anything else?

I had a discectomy operation in the Princes Wing. I was initially apprehensive as I had never stayed on a ward before but found that the staff were very caring and kind throughout the process, from operation to after care. The nursing staff seemed to have formed a good team with the auxiliaries and morale seemed high and positive and I am sure this impacted positively on patient care. Patients, even some that must have been quite wearing, where treated very politely and with the greatest respect. I recovered quickly from my surgery and felt that they facilitated me doing as much as I wanted to for myself but were at hand for the care I couldn't manage. The ward looked clean but watching the cleaners I did think they should have been a bit more thorough with surface cleaning and bathroom cleaning. The only other negative was that there were two instances whilst I was there of the doctors not communicating with the nurses which resulted in a patient not getting some pain relief drugs. However on the whole I would recommend the wing and recommend my consultant.

So glad to hear of your positive feedback on your recent stay on Princes Wing, although we do note your comments about the cleaners and some doctors not being so good at communicating with the nursing team. But all in all, it would seem that yours was a positive experience - we'll make sure that the ward team get to read your kind words. All that remains is to wish you a continued good recovery.

We're sorry that it has taken so long for us to reply - for reasons that are unclear, it doesn't seem that we were made aware that your comments had been posted. That said, we're still delighted to read your feedback about the QEII's service and despite the time that has elapsed, we also know that the staff on Prince's Wing will be pleased to read your kind words.

On your comments about cleaning, we will feed them back but you should also know that we now have one of the lowest infection rates in the region, if not the country. Take for example MRSA blood infections - something that a lot of patients worry about. A few years ago, we would have had around one a week. In the first six months of this year, we have had just one case - that's a huge change, thanks largely to better hand hygiene and improved cleaning.
