"Excellent care, Staff are fantastic, Definitely..."

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Gateshead)

Anything else?

Being a resident of Sunderland and suffering with gynaecological symptoms including abdominal pain, irregular bleeding and infertility, I was referred to Sunderland hospital where I had minimal investigation and years of "review" (ie "sit back and wait"). This was very frustrating for my partner and I, and with no explanation or resolution to my symptoms, it left me pretty miserable. After a change in my circumstances, I moved into the Gateshead area where I registered with a new GP and was referred under the care of the team at the Women's Health Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It was soon discovered that I had a large endometrioma on my left ovary, and I was scheduled for surgery. I was blown away with how quickly this all took place; from the diagnosis to the actual surgery which I only had to wait a couple of months for. The consultant is one of the kindest and most reassuring people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting... even managing to placate my anxious mother, which is a feat in itself. The surgery went well with no hiccups, and my recovery was uneventful. I cannot stress enough how fantastic the nurses are in the surgical ward. They regularly checked on me, were very well mannered and pleasant, and did everything they could to ensure I was comfortable. In fact the only grumble I have is with regards to the food, but I guess that's the case for most hospitals, and besides, I am a very fussy eater. I have since made a full recovery bearing only a very neat scar across my abdomen, but the discomfort I had is gone, replaced only with a mild tenderness where my scar is still healing. My partner and I remain hopeful that the excision of this mass will result in a pregnancy within the year, but if not, then I am advised to return to the clinic for further investigation. If we are successful then we will most definitely be returning to them for my maternity care. They are an absolutely fantastic bunch.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. It’s lovely for staff to have feedback about such a positive patient experience and I will make sure that your comments are passed on to the nurses and doctors on the ward. Faye Butler, Modern Matron for Surgical Services.
