What I liked
The surgery was first class despite its difficulty and seriousness. It was 100% successful. Intensive care was also first class and treatment was tailored to me as an individual.
Individual nurses understood my own particular needs (but see comments below).
What could be improved
Individual nursing staff try very hard but they seem constantly stymied by the lack of staff and, despite the fact that my operation was serious, I think they felt I didn't need the close attention I was supposed to have because I made such an apparently good recovery. I required a special diet after the operation, but no provision at all was made for this.
There seemed to be little or no communication between doctors and nurses, and basic things were overlooked or ignored, e.g. my fluid balance was not monitored.
I was given no information about what to bring to hospital with me and what to do after discharge.
