"Fathers stay on ward"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham

(as a relative),

My father was admitted for a left leg amputation two weeks ago, he has received excellent professional care from the medical and nursing staff on critical care unit B, however since been transferred to ward 305 he appears less happy. We have told staff on admission and again that his vision is poor and that he will require support with eating, staff sometimes put table in his reach however he is having issues loading his cutlery and will only eat half the food on his plate as this is all he can see, he cannot see his pudding and will leave this and it seems dad is hungry as he will ask for stuff when we visit.

My father is disorientated to time and date, and we thought a tv would help orientate him, he may not be able to see the picture but he would recognise tv theme tunes which may help orientate to date and time, and he would also recognise characters. We asked for a tv on Friday and was told no one would be available to sort this out until after the weekend, he still does not have tv today which is Monday pm, my mother also mentioned this to staff, we have now brought a radio in. My dad has brought his own pjs and toiletries in with him however staff are still giving him a hospital gown to wear. He is a big man and has stated they feel uncomfortable especially across the chest, family are also having to apply cream to his leg everyday as the skin on his leg appear dry. I think nursing care is overall ok however care needs to be person centred and staff should listen to what carers are telling them about patients as surely they are the experts by experience and act accordingly.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your father’s experience at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. We welcome all feedback and would like to assure you that all comments are taken seriously and acted upon as part of our ongoing commitment to improving patient experience.

We were very concerned to hear that you are unhappy with some aspects of the care your father has received. We strive to provide the highest standard of care possible and we are very sorry that this has not been your experience.

We understand that since you raised your concerns, senior staff on the ward have been working with you to ensure that you are happy with the care that your father is receiving. This has involved moving him to a bed space with a TV, providing additional nursing support and also providing information to family members about the care he is receiving. Hopefully these measures have reassured you and improved your father’s experience. However, if there are any further concerns about his care or treatment, please don’t hesitate to discuss them with us, you can do this either by speaking to senior nursing staff on the ward or asking to speak to the Matron. Alternatively you can make contact via our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).

PALS can be contacted by phone 0121 371 3280, by email PALS@uhb.nhs.uk, via the hospital website http://www.uhb.nhs.uk/pals-form.htm or in person by dropping in between 9am – 4.30pm (Mon-Fri) to the PALS office located to the left of the Information Desk in the main entrance of the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to post your comments on the Patient Opinion website.
