"Mastectomy and lymph node removal"

About: Southmead Hospital

Anything else?

What I liked: Surgery was excellent, I had no problems with wound healing or infections even though I had chemotherapy before which affected my immune system. Also no problems with lymphodema. I recovered from surgery and got full movement of my arm back more quickly than I was expecting. 9 months later and the scar is almost invisible even after radiotherapy. What could be improved: Admin was very bad. I was mixed up with another patient and nearly called to theatre for the wrong operation. They had recorded my weight wrong at the pre-op and I was nearly given an overdose of anaesthetic for someone weighing 27 kg more than me. Nursing care could also be improved - they kept trying to measure my blood pressure on surgery side, which they shouldn't do as it can cause lymphoedema. Also sick bowls were left for hours without being removed or replaced, one left so long it dissolved. They would not give me a prosthesis when I left the ward even though I had been told I would get one.
